How to Prepare for Your First Professional Wax Appointment So You Get the Best Results

Wax appointment

First-time waxing clients usually arrive with two things: some level of anxiety, and no clear idea of what to actually do beforehand. The anxiety is almost always worse than the appointment itself. But your results really do depend on how you show up. A few steps done right can mean the difference between a clean, long-lasting wax and one that leaves patchy spots or irritated skin.

Here is what you should do before you come in.

Hair Length: Get This Right or Nothing Else Matters

Hair needs to be at least a quarter inch long before wax can grip it cleanly. That is roughly the size of a grain of rice, or about two to four weeks of growth after shaving, depending on how fast your hair grows.

If the hair is shorter than that, the wax will not adhere properly. You will leave with uneven results and may need to rebook. If it has been a while since you shaved and you are worried the hair is too long, do not trim it at home. Your esthetician can trim it right before the service. Hair that is too long can be adjusted; hair that is too short cannot be fixed on the spot.

The practical rule: stop shaving at least three weeks before your first appointment, and resist the urge to clean up the area in the days before you come in.

Exfoliate the Day Before, Not the Day Of

Exfoliating before a wax removes dead skin cells that can trap hair against the surface. This is one of the main causes of ingrown hairs after the appointment. But timing it right matters.

Exfoliate 24 to 48 hours before your appointment, not the morning of. Skin that has been freshly exfoliated is more sensitive and reacts more to the waxing process. Giving your skin a full day to settle makes a real difference in how it responds. A simple scrub or dry brush works fine. Nothing specialized is required.

Skip the Lotion and Oil on Appointment Day

This one surprises most first-timers. If you have a body care routine, skip the moisturizer on the areas being waxed on the day of your appointment.

Lotions and oils create a film on the skin that prevents wax from gripping hair cleanly. The adhesion becomes weaker, and results tend to be messier. Cleanse the area normally and leave it uncoated before coming in.

What to Wear: Loose and Comfortable

Waxed skin is sensitive for several hours after the service. What you wear to and from the appointment affects your comfort.

For leg or bikini waxing, wear loose-fitting bottoms linen or cotton work well. Tight jeans or leggings rubbing against freshly waxed skin during a long drive home is uncomfortable and can increase irritation. For underarm waxing, avoid tops with tight elastic through that area. A loose shirt makes the post-appointment recovery significantly more comfortable.

Managing Discomfort: What Actually Helps

Take ibuprofen 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment. It reduces inflammation and takes the edge off discomfort, particularly for bikini and Brazilian waxing. It will not eliminate the sensation entirely, but it helps, especially on a first visit.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of. Both can make skin temporarily more reactive, which makes the waxing process feel sharper. And during the wax itself: do not hold your breath. Exhale steadily during each pull. Muscle tension from bracing genuinely increases discomfort. Breathing through it makes a measurable difference.

Tell Your Esthetician About Any Medications or Treatments

This step matters and often gets skipped. Before the wax is applied, let your esthetician know if you are using:

  • Retinoids or tretinoin (prescription or over-the-counter)
  • Accutane or any isotretinoin product
  • Prescription topical antibiotics
  • Any recent chemical peels or laser treatments in the area

These treatments thin the outer layer of skin or make it more fragile. Waxing on thinned skin can cause the top layer to lift with the wax, which is painful and can leave temporary marks. Your esthetician needs this information to adjust the approach or recommend waiting.

The same rule applies to recent sunburns. If the area was sunburned within the past two weeks, mention it before the service begins, even if the skin looks healed.

Common Mistakes First-Timers Make

Beyond missing the prep steps above, a few other things tend to create problems:

Booking during the wrong week. Skin is more sensitive in the days immediately before and during your menstrual cycle. If you have flexibility in scheduling, booking in the week after your period tends to result in a more comfortable appointment.

Coming in with sunscreen on the area. Sunscreen, like lotion, creates a film that affects wax adhesion. If you were outside earlier that day, rinse the area thoroughly and skip reapplying until after the appointment.

Not asking questions. Your esthetician has done this hundreds of times. If you are nervous, unsure about the process, or worried about pain in a specific area, say so. A two-minute conversation before the service usually addresses most concerns.

Expecting perfect long-lasting results on day one. The outcome will be smooth, but it may not last as long as future appointments. Hair grows in cycles, so the first wax removes hair in the active growth phase. Hairs in the resting phase show up over the following weeks. That is completely normal.

What to Avoid After Your Appointment

Your skin will be sensitive for 24 to 48 hours after a wax. The follicles are temporarily open and mildly inflamed. What you do during that window affects how your skin looks and feels for the rest of the week.

Avoid for the first 24 to 48 hours:

  • Hot showers or baths (lukewarm water only)
  • Saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs
  • Chlorinated pools or the ocean
  • Intense exercise, since sweat irritates freshly open follicles
  • Tight or synthetic clothing over the waxed area
  • Heavy lotions or anything with fragrance (a light fragrance-free moisturizer or plain aloe is fine)
  • Direct sun exposure on the waxed area without SPF

After 48 hours, you can return to your normal skincare routine. Resume gentle exfoliation three to four days after the appointment to prevent ingrown hairs as the hair grows back.

Between Appointments: Building a Routine That Holds

Skincare between waxing appointments matters as much as the prep beforehand.

Use a gentle exfoliant two to three times per week, starting four days after your wax. This prevents dead skin from building up over the follicle, which is what leads to ingrown hairs. A soft cloth or mild chemical exfoliant is sufficient. Nothing aggressive is needed.

Keep the waxed area moisturized. Dry skin is more prone to ingrowns and can make the next wax slightly more uncomfortable. A light, fragrance-free lotion applied daily after the 48-hour window is enough.

And book your follow-up before you leave. Clients who lock in the next appointment before walking out consistently maintain better results than those who wait until the hair grows back and then try to find an opening.

How Often to Book to See Real Results

Most clients on a consistent four to six week schedule start noticing a real shift by the third or fourth appointment: hair comes back finer, grows more slowly, and there is simply less of it each time. Appointments also go faster once you are on a regular schedule. View the full range of Waxing Services before plan your first booking.
